Beauty Product Breakdown

We all know the Brazilian Blowout has been a hair treatment craze for some time but a new book called No More Dirty Looks breaks down some of the harmful ingredients in this treatment as well as other toxins in all beauty products that we apply multiple times a day. It  attracted my attention because some of my closest fashionista friends have done this treatment. Girls you know who you are :).  Most of my friends and I are careful about what we use in our homes and put in our bodies so let's keep it going as we all know how much consumer power we have! I am not suggesting clearing out your beauty bag but let's stay educated. Spread the word ladies or add this to your gift giving list this year.

Post Thanksgiving soup for you

After a week long Thanksgiving holiday vaca back East, I am gearing up for my holiday party this coming weekend. It's chilly here in LA so I am staying warm and keeping my energy up while doing my holiday decorating with this yummy and super easy soup recipe from Martha Stewart recipes. It's dairy free and easy on the waistline :). It was a hit at my pre-thanksgiving girl party and a great way to use up your leftover sweat potatoes, pumpkins and squashes.  I added cinnamon to the recipe and left out the mushrooms and it was just as good. Enjoy!

Serves 4
  • 2 3/4 pounds sugar pumpkin or butternut squash, halved and seeded
  • 1 onion, peeled and quartered through the stem
  • 2 shiitake mushrooms, stemmed, caps wiped clean
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 5 cups homemade or store-bought low-sodium vegetable stock

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Cut pumpkin into 2-inch pieces. Combine pumpkin, onion, mushrooms, and garlic on a rimmed baking sheet. Add oil and 2 teaspoons salt; toss to coat, then spread in a single layer. Roast until pumpkin is tender when pierced with the tip of a sharp knife, about 30 minutes, rotating pan and tossing vegetables halfway through. Let cool, then remove skins.
  2. Transfer vegetables to a medium saucepan; heat over medium. Pour in 2 cups stock; puree with an immersion blender until smooth. With the blender running, slowly add remaining 3 cups stock, and puree until smooth. Bring soup just to a simmer. Remove from heat, and season with salt and pepper. Cover to keep warm.

    Thanksgiving table delights

With 9 days left until the Thanksgiving holiday, I thought I would share some small touches you can add to your Thanksgiving table at an affordable price. These items could be an excellent addition to your crisp white table cloth and basic white dinnerware.  They will surely add texture to the table and smiles on your guests faces as they enjoy your Thanksgiving meal. Add some candlelight and a flower alternative arrangement of greenery with berries or a simple arrangement of all one kind and color of flower and you are set!

Mix your basic clear wine glass with some colorful water glasses.

I love a crisp white napkin at a dinner table, not to mention it's easy to bleach out any stains, but I couldn't resist these autumn hued ikat print napkins. I had been searching for an elegant pumpkin colored napkin but these are way more unique and have a detailed plum trim.

Love this pumpkin colored napkin from Crate & Barrel

I love a crisp white tablecloth as a backdrop for these textured table runners.

Add a little bling to the table with this Metallic Hyacinth table runner

    Nubby table runner
Use this runner by itself with place mats or over a tablecloth
    Rustic red vine charger
Sustainable Water hyacinth placemat. Great for all year round too.

    Casual Chic Den Update

When decorating for families the challenge is always convincing busy moms that style is still achievable even though sticky fingers, spills and play dates are a part of everyday life. The inspiration for my client Amanda came from the relaxing hues of the sea. This energetic mother needed a den that was realistic for handling her three year old daughter Chloe yet relaxing for her after long days at the office. The style we focused on was calm cool and breezy to go with her existing white slipper cover sofas which by the way are perfect for kids because you can throw them in the washer when accidents happen. The existing white sofa's were a blank canvas for adding all hues of turquoise, blue and acqua for this calming and casual den.

Check out my website for more photos from Amanda's project. We are still working on little Chloe's bedroom and can't wait to share the final look.

    Fashion Fridays: Mad for Missoni

My love for all things Italian continues today with a focus on the fashionable Missoni Home collection. This family run company has been bringing us fabulous knitwear with a multitude of colors since 1953 and their home collection roots itself in that same Missoni tradition. I would use their fabrics, throws or pillows in every project if I could. After generations of producing their iconic prints, this recognizable brand is as stylish and hip as ever.

The Famous Milanese fashion house took their extraordinary textiles into the home in1983. An explosion of colour, pattern and luxurious texture, the Missoni Home collection now incorporates design for every part of our lives from rugs and upholstery fabrics to bedding and towels, from tableware to soft furnishings and furniture. The colorful fabrics and home accessories that this fashion house offers are to die for!

The images below are selections from the 2010 Outdoor collection

Missoni embodies Italian luxury that I just cannot get enough of. I have my favorite Missoni caftan and top but the home collection sends me over the edge!  On my trip to Italy this summer, I couldn't help but go into Missoni in every city we visited. I was so giddy to finally visit the Missoni outlet.  How about these oh so chic tablewares! Dreaming of having a full set one day. Available at Bloomingdales

For those who watch Gossip Girl, you will find their fabric on Lilly's Eames chair in the living room. Love!

Read up on the history of the iconic Italian brand with this book

If you are visiting Milan anytime soon, hit up the 6th floor of the La Rinascente on Piazza Duomo for the Missoni Home display.  If you live in LA you can find Missoni Home products at the Missoni store in Beverly Hills or at Planet Blue stores. NYC has a store on Madison Avenue as well. For the online shoppers, the best selection of all Missoni Home products is available at Unica Home or All Modern

There are so many favorites to choose from that I will surely be blogging about this fashion house again :). Enjoy!

    Lovely Living Room

After two trips back and forth to the east coast in less than two weeks, I am finally settled and excited to share some photos from my client Lisa's recent photo shoot. Even though it was a rare autumn rainy day in LA which affected our typically glorious LA sunlight, my photographer Meghan Beierle-O'Brien's lighting skills made these photos lovely. Love Meghan!
One of my favorite wow factors is to add a vibrant colored wallpaper to a room. For Lisa, we chose a heavy fuschia grasscloth with lots of texture as our jumping off point. We used fuschia accents through linen pillow fabrics, a lacquered display box and a cozy throw. To balance the bold hue we used blue and brown to ground the space. Finally, the natural fiber rug added an additional element of texture that every room needs.

Check out the rest of the photos from the shoot on my website and let me know if you like the look.
