Trends & Events from Westweek 2011

I thought I would give a summarized recap of highlights from Westweek 2011 that took place this week at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, CA for you interior design enthusiasts and bloggers.

First up was the Editors' Round Table panel discussion with editors from our nations leading design publications. There was a lot of advice on how to get published and discussions on design trends. I am a get to the point type of person so below are the stand out comments from the panel.

Newell Turner from House Beautiful:

  • He mentioned his readers wanting more of the Californian lifestyle and design style. He finds the style to have a casual elegance and that it is a major trend right now.
  • Trends that evoke sophistication and livable luxury are big right now
  • Not interested in publishing photos that have already been on a blog or a website. (said by all)
  • It's not necessary to submit professional photos that are 100% styled.

Ann Omvig Maine from Traditional Home:

  • Spoke about the importance of digital media to her magazine and how the blogger community is so refreshing. She also mentioned the upcoming launch of their joint venture online magazine with Lonny Magazine called TradHome.
  • Traditional Home was the first magazine to adopt reader tags which takes advantage of digital media.
  • Mentioned a trend right now is towards one of kind products with a hand made appreciation.
  • Prefers floor plans with furniture on them when submitting your work to her magazine.

Michael Boodro from Elle Decor:

  • When choosing a cover, it is actually a haphazard process. It needs to be colorful, create a mood and represent the spirit of the issue.
  • Mentioned a trend right now involves a lot more layering that is reminiscent of the 70's and that it is a lot more personal now.
  • Suggests making sure your projects style matches with the magazine and then only submit your best work and wait about 6 weeks for the magazine to respond.
  • Wants to hear about the story of the home owner and the evolution. No close up photos necessary

Dara Caponigro from Veranda:

  • Mentioned she tries to respond to all pitches made by designers that want to be in her magazine.
  • Since Dara has taken over as Editor, she is trying to inject more fun, engagement with the reader and a larger emphasis on product than ever before.
  • She feels a current trend is all about high quality products and that consumers are investing in the classics that will last a long time.

Next up was a panel discussion with Susan North of Schumacher & Co. and Trina Turk on Influences of Color and Pattern on fashion and home design.

One of my faves from Trina's newest collection - Soleil L.A. Print

  • Trina mentioned that fashion definitely has a big influence on the production of her residential collection and her Trina Turk fabric line for Schumacher.
  • The production speed of the fashion industry has now overlapped with interiors and consumers and designers are expecting the same speed with interiors and are hungry for what's new.
  • Trina is now working with digital printing with some of the items from her newest clothing collection.
  • Climate and the landscape of Los Angeles is a large inspiration for Trina.
  • She has come out with a men's line called Mr. Turk.

Thursday's buzz was all about the panel discussion with Bravo TV's new show Million Dollar Decorators airing in early Summer. My day started out with meeting one of the shows stars Mary McDonald at her book signing in the pleasant Schumacher & Co. showroom.

At the book signing with Mary
I had a delightful long chat with her at the book signing about her advice for building a successful design brand and even her favorite workouts. Mary is everything I imagined. She is witty and intelligent all while being chic and down to earth at the same time. She has a killer figure and I found out she is a fan of the famous Barry's Bootcamp in West Hollywood. I cannot say enough about how much I adore her. It was a total pleasure and I am looking forward to seeing more from this talented and successful woman. Be sure to pick up Mary's delicious new book Interiors The Allure of Style and look out for her new fabric line with Schumacher coming soon. After reading the book last night, I realized how many of her projects I had torn out of magazines in the past and saved as inspiration. It's a must have for your coffee table book collection.  I for one cannot wait to see this fabric line!
